BHRT closure draws closer

The crisis-hit Bosnian public broadcaster BHRT may finally cease broadcasting on the day the country holds local elections.

According to its management board, quoted by Vijesti, the board does not want to use this as pressure but rather reject responsibility in advance of such a move.

The board also said it was indebted to the DG of BHRT that the broadcasters’ directors had reached an agreement with telecom operators to extend the current system of collection of taxes. This is currently the only source of funding for BHRT, though at the same time interviews will be conducted with the management of BHRT and the two other broadcasters it acts as an umbrella for – RTRS and FBiH – about the possibility of receiver licence fees being paid through electricity bills.

Broadband TV News notes that Bosnia’s House of Representatives rejected the latter earlier this month.

BHRT said that the failure to address its funding has left it in a hopeless situation.

It also said the public would be kept informed daily and that it would meet with representatives of international organisations in Bosnia & Herzegovina.
