Production of quality beer is starting off in Srebrenica for the first time in its history. Locals hope this will not be just another kind of drink. The intention is to make it a Srebrenica brand and a positive story from Srebrenica.
Young man from this town, Davorin Dado Sekulic, whose photographs are daily published at the portal Klix.ba and other international media, did not forget his hometown and returns there whenever he has got the opportunity, Srebrenicke Novine writes.
Wanting to help solve the biggest problem of unemployment in Srebrenica, Davorin decided to open a mini plant for so-called home brewing. So far he has invested around 15,000 KM in equipping production area and procurement of equipment by raising loan, although he is a tenant in Sarajevo.
He intends to produce three types of beer and he has secured the market for the entire production. He plans to hire one person at the beginning, and another two or three with the production expansion.
It is very interesting that his beer, in some way, will be a brand but also a souvenir from Srebrenica because every beer has a specific name and a story on the back of the bottle, which speaks of Srebrenica. His beers will be called Perkman, Andric’s aunt, and Vidran, and these are the stories behind the names.
PERKMAN
Srebrenica is the homeland of the mining spirit, cheerful dwarf Perkman. According to tradition, when there is no one in the mine, he strikes with a hammer and miners would often say they hear the sounds of a hammer when they sit down to rest, and that they would see his traces at the entrance to the mine. It is believed he helped in digging medieval mines which are visible next to the promenade, from the town to the Guber water.
ANDRIC'S AUNT
Ivo Andric's aunt was the municipal scribe in Srebrenica. Andric would spend summer holidays at his aunt in Srebrenica, where he wrote his first short story, “The Journey of Alija Djerzelez” and later his short story “The people of Osat”. The fact that, when enrolling the Vienna and Krakow University, he put this town as his residence, speaks of how much our Nobel Prize winner was connected to Srebrenica and his aunt.
VIDRAN
Vidrani is one of the horses of some of the many armies that wanted to rule Srebrenica from prahistoric times. The town of silver was one of the largest mints in Roman Empire. Srebrenica, which was only 10 days ride from their country-town, was ruled by permanent consuls of the Dubrovnik Republic. Horses and soldiers of some of those invading armies got leprosy and after they bathed in the stream of red water, which springs from the mines, they got cured, so the stream got its name Guber (guba-leprosy).
